Visual development is not just about making something beautiful. It is about making choices that support story, mood, shape, and clarity.
When I started creating worlds for animation, I quickly learned that a good image is not built by adding more details, more mountains, or more dramatic fog. Annoying, I know.
It comes from understanding how simple shapes, references, composition, mood, and storytelling work together to make a world feel believable and alive. Maybe you have ideas, references, and entire worlds in your head, but when you try to put them on the canvas, they become a little disconnected, messy, or suspiciously grey.
That is exactly why I created Shaping Worlds: Visual Development for Animation.
Inside the course, I’ll guide you through my complete visual development process, from visual vocabulary and shape exploration to composition, storytelling, atmosphere, and final image creation, so you can build worlds that feel clear, cinematic, and intentional.
By the end, you will have a finished visual development piece, but more importantly, you will have a repeatable process you can use for your future worlds, projects, and hopefully fewer suspicious grey blobs.
I’m a visual development artist and concept artist with over 17 years of experience creating images for the entertainment industry. Over the years, I’ve contributed to projects and collaborations connected to studios such as DreamWorks, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, Skydance, Sega and Warner, developing work that brings together shape, atmosphere, storytelling, and design clarity.
After spending more than a decade working in American animation studios in Los Angeles, I returned to France and continued building worlds through drawing, design, and visual exploration. My background includes feature animation, development work, and concept-driven worldbuilding, with credits and project associations that include titles such as How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, Astroboy, and Sonic Boom.
In this course, I’ll guide you through the way I approach visual development for animation: starting with simple shapes, building stronger visual ideas, and developing images with more intention, structure, and atmosphere. The goal is not just to make appealing artwork, but to help you create worlds that feel clear, thoughtful, and alive.

LESSON 1.1
Step into the studio where I work and get a quick look at the space, tools, and creative mess behind the process. Probably the best way to visually understand what’s inside my head. Proceed carefully.
LESSON 2.4
References are not just pretty images to collect and forget. In this lesson, I’ll show you how I look at shapes inside references so they can actually support your designs.
LESSON 3.1
Very often, the first versions of my designs begin with simple geometric shapes. Here, I’ll show you how those basic forms can become the foundation for stronger visual ideas.
LESSON 4.4
Animation often uses exaggerated shapes to create powerful, readable messages. In this lesson, I’ll show you how pushing proportions can make your designs feel stronger and more intentional.
LESSON 5.3
Here, we’ll flip the table a little. The goal is to transform a classical fairy tale into something new, while keeping the same story structure underneath.
Learn how to turn simple shapes and early ideas into environments with atmosphere, story, and visual clarity, not just more mountains and dramatic fog.
Understand how to use shape exploration, composition, rhythm, and visual storytelling to make your worlds feel more cohesive, readable, and alive.
Move from scattered ideas to a finished visual development piece using a clearer process for references, thumbnails, mood, structure, and final image creation.
The course is divided into 6 carefully designed modules with 10+ hours of guided lessons and creative demonstrations, thoughtfully structured to help you develop stronger visual ideas step by step. You will gain access to 30+ in-depth video lessons that you can pause, revisit, and study anytime as you build your visual development and worldbuilding skills.
This course was created for aspiring artists, animation enthusiasts, and creative thinkers of all levels who want to learn how to build more intentional, cinematic, and immersive worlds. Each module builds naturally on the previous one, starting with references and visual vocabulary, then moving into shape exploration, composition, storytelling, mood, and the creation of a complete final visual development piece.
With every lesson and every stage of the process, your artistic confidence will grow. What once felt abstract or overwhelming will begin to feel structured and intentional, and by the end of the course, you will be able to create visual development artwork that feels cohesive, atmospheric, and alive using a creative process you can apply to your own future projects.
Begin with an introduction to the course, my studio approach, and the way I use references to build a stronger visual library. You’ll learn how to gather meaningful inspiration, study it with intention, and start developing the visual vocabulary that will support your worldbuilding process.
Explore how simple shapes can become the foundation for stronger visual ideas. You’ll work through shape exploration, silhouette thinking, volume, backgrounds, visual messaging, and composition, learning how to make design choices that feel more readable, dynamic, and intentional.
Move from script and story direction into a complete visual world. You’ll learn how to combine elements, build a sheet composition, shift the mood of an image, create thumbnails, separate foregrounds and backgrounds, and bring your final visual development piece to a finished stage.
We’ll begin by exploring the essential tools, techniques and basics you need to start your artistic journey. You’ll learn how to get the most out of the materials at your fingertips.
Theory is helpful, but progress comes from practice! You’ll find plenty of practical exercises designed to help you improve, along with tips to make your artwork stand out.
Enrollment gives you unlimited, lifelong access to all lessons. Learn at your own pace, revisit tricky topics and take the course in small steps, even just a few minutes a day.
One of the greatest benefits of this course is flexibility. Watch lessons from any device, at home or on the go. Repeat them as many times as you need to master each step.
When you join the course, you’ll also join a group of students who share your passion. Exchange ideas, share progress, and connect with others who are walking the same path.
The course is designed to support you through each stage of the process, with clear explanations, practical exercises, and guidance to help you move through challenges with more confidence.
Extra content that you will get for free with the course!
Learn practical ways to make long creative sessions more comfortable, from posture and setup to small workflow habits that help you draw for longer without turning into a beautifully rendered shrimp.
Follow my rendering process as I add atmosphere, lighting, depth, and final polish to an image, showing how a simple piece can become more cinematic and immersive.
Get a closer look at the tools I use in my creative process, from sketching and exploration to reference gathering, idea development, and building visual concepts with more ease.
Explore a curated list of books and resources on concept art, storytelling, design thinking, and cinematic worldbuilding, selected to keep feeding your visual library long after the course ends.
